FROM CALORIES TO MOLECULES

 

A bowl of pasta might have the same calories as a serving of cheese, but their metabolic actions on our cells has far reaching effects that surpasses the concept of calorie counting.  We find ourselves in a wave of epidemics world wide ranging from obesity, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, brain disease within a few decades despite calorie counting, low fat diets and food villains like butter for instance.  

 

What are these metabolic effects and why do they matter?

 

The 3 major macronutrients, protein,carbohydrate and fats elicit hormonal responses that either increase or decrease inflammation.  Studies in the past decade has revealed that systemic inflammation being the main driver behind the epidemics of chronic diseases.  Imagine cutting yourself and the process that ensues ie pain, heat, swelling and redness.  These signs are produced by powerful inflammatory hormones and chemicals released by your immune system.  Now imagine, every time you eat, causing the same process in each and every cell in your body, but without seeing or feeling it.  This is called Silent Inflammation and over time, causes cell destruction and death.  Essentially, the human body consists of cells which are programmed to form organs ie skin, brain, liver, heart etc.  Therefore if your cells are inflamed, you will end up with a chronic disease, cancer or accelerated ageing in these organs.
